Chemical Peels

How a Chemical Peel improves the skin
A chemical peel offers one of the most powerful non-surgical skin improvements available. It involves the application of highly specialized acid solutions to remove damaged layers of cells from the skin's outer surface--revealing a more healthful and glowing skin.
The skin's outer surface can have anywhere from 15 to 25 dead layers of cells. When all of those dead layers sit on top of your skin, the skin color appears dull and uneven, the pores look congested, and the skin displays more fine lines and wrinkles. The molecular structure of the acid solutions are so small that they can cut through the dead layers of cells and lift them up and out of the skin by flaking. Results include: “drying out” active acne, reducing shallow wrinkles and scars, and in some cases lightening hyperpigmented areas (dark patches), and improving the overall appearance and health of sun damaged and aged skin.

What to anticipate during the Chemical Peel procedure
It is suggested when scheduling this treatment to allow yourself some down-time in case the skin exfoliation is more than expected.
It is impossible to predict exactly what will happen to your skin and how much peeling will occur.  Listed is a general description you should anticipate:
  • Immediately following the treatment, the skin will feel very smooth and tight.
  • There may be a color change- pink to red the first day and followed by a brown tone until peeling occurs.
  • You should avoid wearing foundation make-up for 1 week.  Eye make-up may continue to be worn the entire time and mineral powder can be added on day 3.
  • The skin will generally begin peeling in 2-3 days, however peeling can take place anytime during the following 7 days.
  • The skin does not always noticeably peel. It may take 2-3 treatments for this to happen. There are many other advantages from a skin peel; strengthening collagen production, detoxing the skin of pre-cancerous cells and improving overall skin integrity.  The skin will generally begin peeling in 2-3 days, however peeling can take place anytime during the following 7 days.

The Outcome
50% of the outcome of the peel depends solely on you!  Using the appropriate home care products (Rhonda Allison's Milk Cleanser, Drop of Essence-Hydration Drops, Epidermal Growth Factor Serum, and Daytime Defense SPF 30) after the peel will ensure proper and faster healing. Also remember it is very important in the healing process to wear a hat, avoid picking and avoid direct sun on your face for at least 3 weeks. (I would prefer if you never got direct sun on your face ever!)  Post home care instructions will be given to you the day of your peel.

How often can you receive a Chemical Peel
I recommend that you do to a series of 2 to 3 peels spaced 3 weeks apart for the best results. This series can be repeated twice a year. The number of peels required for any given problem varies with the individual.

Post home care instructions for a chemical peel
Do nothing to your skin following your treatment. Avoid sun and heat exposure as well as any strenuous activity. No exercising for 48 hours. You must wear a hat when outdoors or in a car for the next 2 weeks.

CAUTION: DO NOT PICK OR TEAR AWAY LOOSE SKIN (this may cause surface scarring, irritation and hyperpigmentation)

Day 1(day after the peel) & 2:  Your skin will feel dry and tight and may have a slight reddish tone. If you have any swelling or sign of irritation, please call me immediately.  Although there is no cause for alarm, I want to be made aware of this and I will advise you with more detailed instructions.

You may now begin cleansing with the Milk Cleanser. Do not wash your face in the shower or put your face under the shower head, only gently cleanse over the sink. Too much water on the face will mess up the flaking process. Use Drop of Essence-Hydration Drops around the eyes and lips and Daytime Defense SPF 30 all over the face.  Drop of Essence-Hydration Drops may be used again at bedtime. You must (try to) avoid any make up other than eye make up.

Day 3-7
:  Exfoliation will occur (anywhere from mild, hardly visible to heavy continuous peeling).Do not be concerned how much you actually peel.

Apply Drop of Essence-Hydration Drops and Daytime Defense during the day and Epidermal Growth Factor Serum at night. (This is a very active topical and may sting when first applied to fresh new skin.)

You may now wear eye make-up and mineral powder, but please wait at least one week before applying foundation. Foundation make-up is too heavy and clogging while the skin is trying to heal. Do not use Retin-A, AHA, or harsh scrubs for 2 weeks. You may begin your normal skin routine after 1 week (cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and applying sunblock).

For the best results, return in 10 days for a follow up hydration treatment. This is very important in the healing process.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call. Often times what may seem unusual to you is really very normal and a quick call could save yourself from needless concern.
